English is the native language. Welsh is spoken in Wales, Scottish Gaelic in parts of Scotland. Regional accents can be strong but standard English is understood everywhere. All services, signage, and documentation are in English. One of the easiest countries for English-speaking travelers.
London Underground (Tube) is extensive. Oyster card or contactless payment for all London transit. National Rail connects cities efficiently. CrossCountry and LNER for long distances. Buses supplement trains. Domestic flights useful for London-Edinburgh/Scotland. Rental cars useful for countryside but driving in London is not recommended.
Highly cashless. Contactless payment is standard almost everywhere. Credit/debit cards accepted universally. Cash is rarely needed. ATMs (called cashpoints) are free at major banks. Pound Sterling is strong — budget accordingly. Apple Pay and Google Pay widely used.
Maritime climate (mild but rainy year-round — always carry a jacket). Driving is on the left. Pubs are central to social culture (last orders around 11pm). Tipping is less expected than in the US (10% at restaurants is normal, not mandatory). NHS provides emergency healthcare. Power outlets use Type G plugs (230V).
