Thai is the national language. English is widely understood in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants in Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai. Outside tourist zones, English proficiency drops significantly. Many menus and signs in tourist areas are bilingual. Taxi and tuk-tuk drivers may have limited English — having your destination written in Thai helps enormously.
Bangkok has BTS Skytrain and MRT subway — fast and affordable. Grab (ride-hailing app) is the safest way to get around by car. Domestic flights connect major cities cheaply (AirAsia, Nok Air). Long-distance buses and trains are inexpensive but slow. Ferries connect islands. Motorbike taxis are common but risky for inexperienced riders.
Cash is still king for street food, markets, and small shops. ATMs are everywhere and accept international cards (180 THB fee per withdrawal). Credit cards accepted at hotels, malls, and larger restaurants. 7-Eleven and FamilyMart accept cards. QR payment (PromptPay) is widely used by locals but less accessible for tourists.
Tropical climate year-round (hot season Mar-May, rainy Jun-Oct, cool Nov-Feb). Tap water is not safe to drink — use bottled water. Modest dress required at temples (cover shoulders and knees). The monarchy is deeply respected; lèse-majesté laws are strictly enforced. Remove shoes before entering temples and homes.
