Mandarin Chinese is the main language. English proficiency is moderate in Taipei (better among younger people) but limited elsewhere. MRT and major transit have full English signage. Many restaurants have picture menus. Google Translate works well for Chinese. Japanese is understood by some older Taiwanese, and Japanese tourists are warmly received.
Taipei MRT is excellent, clean, and affordable. EasyCard works on MRT, buses, and convenience stores. Taiwan High Speed Rail connects Taipei to Kaohsiung in 90 minutes. YouBike bike-sharing is widely available. Intercity buses are comfortable and cheap. Scooter rental popular but traffic can be intense.
Cash and cards are both widely used. ATMs abundant. Credit cards accepted at most restaurants and shops in cities. Night markets and small vendors are cash only. EasyCard can be used for small purchases at convenience stores and some shops. LINE Pay is popular locally.
Subtropical climate (hot, humid summers; mild winters). Tap water is technically safe but locals prefer bottled/filtered. Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) are on every block and offer incredible services. Earthquake preparedness is important. Power outlets use Type A/B plugs (110V, same as Japan/US).
