Korean is the national language. English is taught in schools but conversational ability varies. Seoul's tourist areas, Myeongdong, Gangnam, and Itaewon have good English support. Subway and major signage have full English. Outside Seoul, English is more limited. Translation apps (Papago is popular in Korea) are very useful.
Seoul Metro is one of the world's best subway systems — clean, extensive, and cheap. T-money card works on all transit and many stores. KTX high-speed rail connects Seoul to Busan in 2.5 hours. Express buses are comfortable and frequent. Taxis are affordable. Kakao T app for ride-hailing. Jeju is best explored by rental car.
South Korea is nearly cashless. Credit and debit cards accepted almost everywhere, including small restaurants and convenience stores. Samsung Pay and Kakao Pay are dominant. ATMs at convenience stores accept international cards. Some traditional markets still prefer cash. Naver Pay is also widely used.
Four distinct seasons (cold winters, hot humid summers, beautiful spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage). Tap water is safe in Seoul but locals prefer filtered. Fast internet and free WiFi almost everywhere. Bowing is a common greeting. Age hierarchy is important in social interactions. Power outlets use Type C/F plugs (220V).
