Spanish is the dominant language. English is spoken in major tourist areas (Cancun, Cabo, resort zones) but very limited elsewhere. In Mexico City, English is understood at upscale establishments but not widely on the street. Learning basic Spanish is highly recommended and will dramatically improve your experience. Many indigenous languages are also spoken.
Domestic flights connect major cities cheaply (Volaris, VivaAerobus). Mexico City has an extensive Metro system. ADO luxury buses are excellent for intercity travel (Cancun-Playa del Carmen, Mexico City-Oaxaca). Uber/DiDi work in major cities. Rental cars useful but driving can be challenging. Colectivos (shared vans) are cheap for short distances.
Cash is still important, especially for street food, markets, and small towns. ATMs widely available at banks. Credit cards accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas. Mercado Pago and digital wallets are growing. Mexican Peso offers good value for tourists. USD often accepted in border areas and tourist zones but at poor rates.
Climate varies (tropical coasts, temperate highlands, arid north). Do not drink tap water — use bottled water for drinking and even brushing teeth. Street food is generally safe at busy stalls. Altitude in Mexico City (2,240m) can cause altitude sickness. Tipping is expected (10-15% at restaurants). Power outlets use Type A/B plugs (127V).
