Japanese is the only widely spoken language. English signage is common in major cities and transit systems, but conversational English is limited outside tourist hotspots. Translation apps are highly recommended. Staff at hotels, airports, and major train stations generally speak basic English.
Japan Rail Pass offers unlimited bullet train (shinkansen) travel and is the best value for multi-city trips. IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) work on all urban transit. Trains are extremely punctual. Domestic flights are fast but often more expensive than rail. Rental cars are useful mainly in rural areas.
Japan is still more cash-oriented than most developed countries, though this is changing rapidly. Convenience stores have ATMs that accept international cards (7-Eleven, Lawson). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities but may be refused at smaller restaurants and rural businesses. IC cards can be charged and used for many purchases.
Tap water is safe everywhere. Power outlets use Type A plugs (same as US/Canada, 100V). Tipping is not practiced and can be considered rude. Shoes must be removed when entering homes, many restaurants, and temples. Tattoos may restrict access to some onsen (hot springs).
