Bahasa Indonesia is the national language and widely spoken. English is common in Bali and major tourist areas but limited elsewhere. Hotel and tour staff speak English. In Bali, many signs and menus are in English. Outside tourist zones, basic Indonesian phrases go a long way. Balinese, Javanese, and hundreds of local languages coexist.
Domestic flights essential between islands (Lion Air, Garuda). Grab and Gojek for ride-hailing and motorbike taxis. Scooter rental extremely popular in Bali. Ferries connect nearby islands. Private drivers are affordable for day trips. Jakarta has TransJakarta BRT and MRT. Long-distance trains on Java are comfortable.
Cash is important, especially outside Bali. ATMs available but may charge fees. In Bali tourist areas, credit cards are widely accepted. GoPay and OVO are popular digital wallets. Indonesian Rupiah has very large denominations (100,000 IDR ≈ ¥1,000). Always carry some cash for local warungs and transport.
Tropical climate. Tap water is not safe to drink. Bali has a unique Hindu culture different from the rest of predominantly Muslim Indonesia. Bargaining expected at markets. Dress modestly when visiting temples. Beware of monkeys at temple sites. Traffic in Bali and Jakarta can be extremely congested.
